Clear Roofing & Exteriors · Storm & Hail Damage
Storm & Hail Damage Roof Repair and Insurance Claim Help
When hail bruises your shingles or straight-line wind tears off tabs, most of the damage is invisible from the ground and the clock on your insurance claim is already running. Clear Roofing & Exteriors gets on the roof and photographs every hit, then meets your insurance adjuster up there so the claim scope matches what the storm actually did. A lot of our 5-star reviews start with a hailstorm and an adjuster, and the work is often covered by your policy rather than paid out of pocket.

The Difference
Why Homeowners Choose Clear Roofing & Exteriors for Storm & Hail Damage
We know how adjusters read a roof
Clear Roofing & Exteriors documents storm damage the way an adjuster needs to see it, then meets that adjuster on your roof. Chalked test squares and dated photos, mapped slope by slope. That paper trail is what stops covered damage from getting missed or lowballed. Many customers came to us specifically because a prior contractor left money and coverage on the table.
Damage caught before it becomes a leak
Hail and wind damage rarely shows itself until water is dripping through a ceiling, and by then the filing window on your policy may be closing. We get up there while the evidence is fresh. A bruised mat or a creased tab found two weeks after the storm still dates to that storm. Let it sit a couple of years and the carrier calls the same damage wear, which your policy does not pay for.
Experience and a GAF Master Elite install
A storm claim only pays off if the roof that goes back on is done right. As an experienced, family-owned company working across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, and as a GAF Master Elite contractor, we install full manufacturer-backed systems. GAF audits our installs, which is what keeps the warranty on your storm-replaced roof worth the paper it is printed on.
Watch For These
Signs You Need Storm & Hail Damage
- Dark bruises or soft spots on shingles where hail knocked the protective granules loose and fractured the mat underneath
- Piles of shingle granules collecting in gutters and at the bottom of downspouts after a storm
- Lifted, curled, creased, or missing shingle tabs along ridges, rakes, and the windward slope
- Dented or dinged metal flashing, vents, gutters, and downspouts, which are the easiest hail impacts to confirm from the ground
- Fresh water stains on ceilings or in the attic, or daylight visible through the roof deck, after a hail or wind event

Our Process
The Clear Roofing & Exteriors Storm & Hail Damage Process
- 01
Free post-storm inspection
We get on the roof soon after the storm and check the field of shingles, flashing, valleys, vents, and gutters for hail bruising and wind damage. You get an honest answer on whether the damage is real and whether it rises to a claim, with no pressure and no charge.
- 02
Full damage documentation
We photograph every hail hit, wind tear, and dented component and map the damage across each slope. This is the evidence an insurance carrier requires, and documenting it thoroughly up front is what keeps a fair claim from getting denied or shorted later.
- 03
Meet your adjuster on site
When the insurance adjuster comes out, we are there on the roof with them. We walk the same damage with them and speak up when a slope gets shorted. Adjusters sometimes write a patch for a roof that needs replacing, and the time to push back is while everyone is still standing on the shingles.
- 04
Repair or full replacement, done right
Once the claim is settled, we complete the covered work, whether that is a targeted repair or a full GAF Master Elite replacement. Before we start, you get the scope and your out-of-pocket cost in writing, plus a start date you can hold us to.

Storm & Hail Damage: What to Know
What Hail and Wind Actually Do to a Roof
File a claim and your carrier will want to know exactly what kind of damage they are paying for. Hail damage and wind damage leave different marks, and a roof that has taken a bad storm often shows both. The most common asphalt shingle roofs in this region are architectural laminate shingles, and they fail in predictable ways once hail and wind get to them.
Hail bruises a shingle the way it bruises fruit. The stone knocks the protective mineral granules off the surface and, on a hard enough hit, fractures the asphalt mat and fiberglass reinforcement underneath. From the driveway the roof can look fine. Up close, those bruises are soft to the touch and show up as dark circular spots where the granules are gone. Once the granule layer is compromised, the shingle can no longer shield the asphalt from the sun, and that spot begins to age and crack years ahead of the rest of the roof. That is why hail damage is a covered loss even when the roof is not leaking yet: the damage shortens the life of the shingle whether or not water is coming through today.
Wind works differently. Straight-line winds and gusts get under the leading edge of a shingle, break the factory adhesive seal, and lift or fold the tab back. Sometimes the tab tears off entirely and ends up in the yard. Even when a lifted shingle flops back down, the seal is broken and that shingle is now free to catch the next wind and drive rain underneath. Wind also loosens ridge caps, peels back step flashing at walls and chimneys, and dents or detaches gutters and metal accessories. Metal components are useful in a claim because dents on vents, flashing, and gutters are the easiest hail and wind impacts to verify, and they corroborate the damage on the shingles above them.

None of this is easy to spot from a ladder, let alone the driveway. Bruised shingles blend into the field. A broken seal looks identical to an intact one until you lift the tab. Homeowners routinely go months without realizing a storm left a covered claim on their roof, and by then the filing window with their carrier may be closing.

100% customer focused and detail oriented. I hired them to roof my home, then my mom's. Top-notch work, twice.
How the Insurance Claim Works, and Where We Come In
When storm damage is legitimate, a new or repaired roof is often an insurance matter rather than an out-of-pocket one, and Clear Roofing & Exteriors has been walking homeowners through those claims for years. Homeowners insurance policies cover sudden, storm-caused damage such as hail and wind. What they do not cover is ordinary wear, age, or neglect, which is exactly why documentation is everything. Carriers pay when the file proves a storm event. Give them thin photos with no dates and they have every opening to call real hail damage wear and tear and deny it.
The process starts with our free inspection. If we find damage that rises to a claim, we photograph and map it thoroughly, then you file the claim with your carrier. The insurance company sends an adjuster to verify the damage and write a scope of covered work. That visit sets the scope for everything that follows, so we are on the roof with your adjuster. We walk the same slopes, point out every hail hit and wind tear, and make sure the flashing, vents, gutters, and accessories that also took damage are counted. Adjusters are thorough, but they are also human and working fast, and a contractor standing on the roof with them keeps line items from quietly falling off the scope.
Once the carrier approves the claim, they issue a scope and a payment based on replacement cost, typically less your deductible. In most cases your out-of-pocket cost on a covered storm claim is your deductible, not the full price of the roof. We complete the approved work and, if we uncover additional storm damage once the old roof is off, we document it and supplement the claim so the carrier covers what is actually there. Throughout, you get everything in writing, and you always know what you owe before we start.

A word on timing and on the people who knock on your door after a storm. Insurance carriers hold homeowners to filing deadlines, and storm-chasing crews from out of state canvass a neighborhood hard after a big hail event and sign every contract they can. Try getting one of them back for a warranty call two years later. Clear Roofing & Exteriors is a local, family-owned company that has been doing this across PA, NJ, and DE for years. Owner Stephen Mattiola runs the company, project manager Zach runs the crews, and the team writes the estimates and walks homeowners through the claim. When a warranty question comes up in year five, the same people pick up the phone.

After the Storm: Acting Fast and Protecting the Roof You Get
The single best thing a homeowner can do after a hail or wind event is get the roof looked at soon, while the damage is fresh and the filing window is open. There is no downside. Maybe we find nothing worth filing, and we tell you that plainly at no charge. When there is real damage, you walk away holding photos dated close to the storm, which is exactly what a carrier wants to see. Waiting is what costs people coverage, because a small break in the shingle seal quietly lets water into the deck, and by the time it stains a ceiling the damage has spread and the claim window may have passed.
If a storm has left an active leak or missing shingles, temporary protection comes first. We can tarp and secure an exposed area to stop water intrusion while the claim is processed. Left open, that same hole soaks insulation and drywall, and now the interior damage is its own fight with the carrier. Getting the roof watertight quickly protects your home and keeps the claim clean.
Cost works differently on storm jobs than on a roof you are paying for yourself, because so much rides on what your policy covers. On an approved claim, your cost is usually your deductible rather than the full replacement price, which is what makes storm damage so different from a routine, age-driven roof replacement. The variables on the roof itself are the same as any job: the size and pitch of the roof, the material, how many old layers have to come off, and whether the storm or years of moisture left rot in the decking that has to be replaced. We give you a clear written estimate and a clear picture of the covered scope before any work begins.

When we do rebuild a storm-damaged roof, we build it to outlast the next storm. As a GAF Master Elite contractor we install the complete system. Synthetic underlayment goes down first, with ice-and-water shield at the eaves and in the valleys where wind-driven rain works hardest. The architectural shingles get nailed to spec and sealed. Flashing is rebuilt at every chimney and wall rather than reused, and the attic ventilation gets balanced so the deck can dry. The manufacturer warranty rides on that whole system, and so does how the roof holds up when the next hail season comes through. Keep it performing with two cheap habits: a quick look after any major storm, and gutters clean enough to move water off the roof fast.

Storm & Hail Damage: Frequently Asked Questions
Does insurance cover storm and hail roof damage?
Yes, homeowners policies cover sudden storm-caused damage such as hail and wind, though not ordinary age or wear. The key is documentation, because carriers look for a reason to reclassify hail damage as wear, and a thin photo file hands them one. Clear Roofing & Exteriors photographs and maps the damage the way a carrier needs to see it, and we meet your adjuster on site to walk it with them. In most approved claims, your out-of-pocket cost is your deductible rather than the full price of the roof.
How do I know if my roof has hail or wind damage?
Most of it is not visible from the ground. Hail shows up as dark, soft bruises where granules are knocked loose, plus granules piling up in your gutters. Wind shows up as lifted, creased, or missing shingle tabs and dented flashing, vents, and gutters. Because it is so hard to spot without getting on the roof, have it professionally inspected after any significant storm. The inspection is free, and it beats learning about the damage from a ceiling stain after your filing deadline has passed.
Will you meet my insurance adjuster at the house?
Yes, every time. We are on the roof with your adjuster, walking the same damage and pointing out every hail hit, wind tear, and dented component. Line items fall off a scope when nobody who climbs roofs for a living is up there to catch it. Adjusters work fast, and having a roofer on site with them keeps the claim complete and fair.
How long after a storm do I have to file a claim?
Deadlines vary by policy, so sooner is always better. And past the paperwork, the roof itself keeps deteriorating, since every broken seal is an open path for water to reach the deck. Getting a free inspection soon after the storm gives you documented, freshly dated evidence, which is exactly what a carrier wants to see. Call (484) 983-3476 and we will get out to look at it.
Should I trust the roofer who knocked on my door after the storm?
Be careful. Out-of-state crews canvass a neighborhood after a big hail event and sign contracts fast, then getting one back for warranty work a year later is another story. Clear Roofing & Exteriors is a local, family-owned company that has worked across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware for years, and the crew that puts your roof on will still be in the area when the warranty matters. As a GAF Master Elite contractor, we back our storm rebuilds with a full manufacturer-warranted system.
