The settlement started as Perkiomen Bridge, named for the crossing built in 1799 with money raised through a lottery the Pennsylvania Legislature approved.
Henry A. Hunsicker put up the Freeland Seminary in 1848 and the village around it took the name Freeland. When the railroad arrived in 1868 the two names went to war over the station, and the rail company settled it by calling the stop Collegeville after the Pennsylvania Female College that Abraham Hunsicker had founded in 1851. Ursinus College followed a year later, in 1869, and the borough was incorporated in 1896.
The Perkiomen Bridge and the Perkiomen Bridge Hotel are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the older houses near that bridge are where we more often find layered roofs hiding bad decking. Borough students attend the Perkiomen Valley School District.
