A thunderstorm rolls across Chester County, the power blinks, a few branches come down, and by morning the sky is blue and the roof looks fine from the driveway. That last part is the trap, because wind creases shingles without tearing them off and hail bruises the mat without punching through, so most of the storm damage we find on West Chester and Downingtown roofs was invisible from the ground the day after the storm.
The leak arrives weeks or months later, and by then the connection to the storm is easy to miss and harder to prove to an insurance carrier. This guide covers what our inspectors actually look for, what you can check yourself without leaving the ground, and the point where it is worth having us put eyes on it.

What a Chester County thunderstorm actually does to a roof
The storms that do real damage here are not always the ones that make the news. A summer thunderstorm cell can push straight-line gusts across a ridgeline for thirty seconds and lift shingles on one slope while leaving the rest of the block untouched. Hail is just as streaky, and the May 2025 hail storm that hit our area left some neighborhoods with totaled roofs while streets a mile away saw nothing, with homeowners in the hit zone still discovering the damage months later.
Wind and hail hurt a roof differently. Wind goes after the edges and the seal, lifting tabs, breaking the adhesive bond that holds each shingle to the one below it, and creasing the mat at the fold line. Hail goes after the surface, knocking the protective granules loose and bruising the fiberglass mat underneath, and both kinds of damage shorten the life of the roof even when nothing is visibly missing.
The from-the-ground checklist
You do not need a ladder to do a useful first pass. After any storm with strong wind or hail, walk the perimeter of the house and look for these. Binoculars or a zoomed phone photo beat squinting.
- Shingles or tabs in the yard. Whole shingles on the lawn are the obvious one. Even a single tab means the seal failed somewhere, and where one tab let go, its neighbors were strained.
- Granules piling up. Check the downspout splash blocks and the driveway below the gutter runs. A sudden pile of coarse black or colored grit after a storm is the roof shedding its armor.
- Lifted, creased, or flipped tabs. Scan each slope at a low angle in morning or evening light. Wind-creased shingles often lie back down and show only as a faint horizontal shadow line.
- Dented gutters, downspouts, or flashing. Soft aluminum takes hail marks long before shingles fail. Dents here are your cue to have the shingles checked properly.
- Dings on the deck, AC fins, or window screens. Hail does not aim. Marks on other soft surfaces around the house tell you the roof took the same hits.
- Tarps and crews on neighboring roofs. If three houses on your street are getting storm work, your roof stood in the same weather. That alone is worth a free inspection.
Wind damage is sneakier than hail
Hail at least leaves marks you can point at. Wind damage hides. A gust lifts a course of shingles, creases them at the nail line, breaks the seal strip, and then the shingles settle back into place looking normal.
The crease becomes a hinge. Every windy day afterward works that hinge, and eventually the tab tears off or the crack opens enough to let water past. We regularly find wind damage on roofs where the owner had no idea anything happened, because from the ground there was nothing to see.
That is also why the age of the roof matters. Seal strips on a newer roof usually re-bond in warm weather.

On a roof past its mid-teens the asphalt has stiffened, the re-bond is weak, and one good storm can unzip whole courses. If your roof is in that range and a storm has been through, an inspection is cheap insurance even if everything looks fine.
Phil and Zach, the two brothers who own the company, stopped by one day offering a free roof inspection and spotted wind damage to our shingles. We have a large home, over 8,300 sq. ft., with a 23-year-old roof. We weren't experiencing leaks and hadn't been planning a replacement, but I knew the roof was nearing the end of its life, so I let them take a look.
Inside the house: attic and ceiling signs
The second half of the check happens inside. Pick a bright day and bring a flashlight into the attic. You are looking for pinpoints of daylight around pipe boots, vents, and chimneys, for insulation that is matted or darker in one spot, and for water staining on the underside of the decking, especially trailing downhill from a penetration.
On the living side, watch the ceilings and the tops of exterior walls for the first few weeks after a storm. A faint tan ring that grows after each rain is a slow leak announcing itself. Catching it at the ring stage is the difference between a repair and a drywall project.
What not to do after the storm
Do not get on the roof. Storm-loosened shingles slide underfoot, and walking a bruised roof can grind granules off and make honest damage harder to read. Ground and attic checks are safe; the roof walk is our job, and we carry the harness for it.
Do not sign with the first out-of-town crew chasing the storm through the county. After big hail events the area fills with trucks with out-of-state plates that will be gone before the first callback. Use a local contractor with a real address, a track record you can read, and crews who will still be here next season.
And do not start a claim before the damage is documented. A claim opened on a hunch, then closed for lack of evidence, still sits on your loss history. Photos first, inspection second, claim third.
Document first, then decide
Whatever you find, photograph it the day you find it, with the date, from wide enough to show which slope you are looking at. Save the date of the storm itself too. Your insurance policy sets a window for storm claims, it is shorter than most homeowners assume, and the further the discovery drifts from the storm date, the more the documentation carries the claim.
When we inspect after a storm, we chalk what we find, photograph every mark, and hand you the full set whether or not any work follows. If the damage clears the bar for a claim, that file is what the adjuster walks the roof with. If it does not, you have a dated baseline for the next storm, which in this county is never far away.

When it cannot wait
Everything above assumes the roof is keeping the water out while you sort it out. If it is not, the order changes. Water on the floor, a sagging ceiling, or daylight through the decking means the priority is a tarp and a dry-in, today, and the paperwork follows.
Move anything valuable out from under the wet spot, put a bucket under the drip, and call us. Photographs of the active leak are the strongest evidence a claim ever gets, so if you can shoot ten seconds of video on the way to the phone, do it.
