Gutters

New roof on a white colonial set among mature trees.

A separate Clear Roofing & Exteriors roof project; the mature trees around it are the kind that decide which guard a gutter needs.

Gutter guards in Chester County: screen, reverse-curve or micro-mesh?

Gutter guards get sold as the end of gutter cleaning, but even a good one needs checking, and the guard that works on one street can overflow on the next. The right type depends on what falls on your roof, how steep the roof is, and whether the gutter under it is sized and hung correctly.

Clear Roofing & Exteriors installs seamless gutters with or without guards across Chester County, and the crew picks the guard and the gutter together as one system. This guide covers the three common guard types and how to tell which one your house needs.

Start with the trees over the roofline

Walk around the house in late fall and look up. Oak and maple drop broad leaves in volume, plus seed pods and fine debris in spring. Pine and spruce drop needles that can slip through coarse openings. A house on an open lot with a few young trees puts very little on the roof at all.

The crew's rule of thumb: heavy oak and maple cover calls for micro-mesh, and a lighter tree line can get by with a simple screen or a reverse-curve cover.

The three guard types, side by side

Guard type What it stops Where it fits
Screen Leaves and larger debris Light tree cover, mostly broad leaves
Reverse-curve cover Leaves and larger debris, which slide off the hood Light tree cover
Micro-mesh Leaves plus fine grit and small debris, while water passes through Heavy oak and maple cover

Guards are priced by the linear foot, and the type moves the number more than anything else. Simple screens sit at the low end and heavy micro-mesh systems at the top, so match the guard to the trees rather than buying the heaviest one by default.

Roof pitch and the gutter underneath matter too

A steep roof sends water to the edge faster than a low one, and a guard that fights the trough profile creates its own overflow. So the crew specifies the guard and the gutter together, from the start.

A guard also cannot fix a gutter that is too small or pitched wrong. The crew calculates roof area and pitch, then specifies 5-inch or 6-inch K-style gutter. Steep roofs and valleys that dump a lot of water get 6-inch with 3x4 downspouts. Put a guard on an undersized run and the water still backs up behind it.

Check the wood behind the gutter before anything new goes on. Years of overflow rot the fascia board, and a gutter hung on soft wood will not stay put. Our guide to fascia rot behind gutters shows how to check it.

Within two weeks, their team was at my home, cleaning and repairing my gutters with incredible attention to detail.

Guarded gutters still need a look

Good guards cut down how often a gutter needs cleaning by a lot. No gutter system is maintenance-free, though, and even a guarded gutter wants a look every year or two. After a major wind or hail storm, have the system checked so a bent run or a loose section gets fixed before it rots the wood behind it.

Winter ice is a separate problem from leaves. If water backs up at the eaves when snow melts, read our guide to preventing ice dams.

Put the guards on with the gutters

When new gutters are going up anyway, the guards can go on during the same visit. The written estimate is itemized line by line: footage, downspouts, guards and any carpentry, so you can see what the guard adds before you decide.

Clear Roofing & Exteriors takes gutter calls at (484) 983-3476 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. See the gutter installation page or use the contact page to book a free inspection and an itemized estimate.
